Direct Inquiry & Non-Duality Pointers

Who Am I? What Am I?

Persistent direct inquiry into “Who am I, what am I?” will destroy all other thoughts, concepts, and lies about who you really are. The Self always is, always was, and always will be.

Your mind may accept or may deny that you are pure awareness or beyond. It doesn’t matter. Your mind can’t be expected to understand because thought cannot comprehend what is beyond thought.

You must realize the truth, not just think about it. And no one can do it for you. The good news is, it’s easy because the answer is already here in the eternal present moment. One effective way to realize the answer is through a process known as direct inquiry.

For some, just one hour of direct inquiry may result in Self-Realization. For others it may take longer. It doesn’t matter. Persistence is important. No one can do it for you.

The process of Direct Inquiry

It’s much easier than you thought. It’s just a matter of recognizing the obvious that has been overlooked.

Start by asking the questions, “Who am I? What am I?”

Whatever comes, peel away the layers of ignorance until the knowledge shines forth. As thoughts arise, let them come and go. Ask, to whom did these thoughts arise? Without these thoughts do I exist?

Who am I? What am I?

If colors, shapes, and concepts of any kind arise along with the answer, no matter how strong or subtle let them come. Ask, without this color, shape, or concept, who am I, what am I? Do I exist?

Check your answer.

Keep peeling away the layers. There is no question more important than, “Who am I?” So, be persistent until the answer is Self-evident.

Who am I? What am I? Do I exist?

With persistence, the question will eventually even destroy the question itself and the Self which is always present will be realized.

Non-Duality Pointers

During direct inquiry meditation it’s useful to have a list of pointers to help you discover the answer to the questions “Who am I, What am I?” Below is a list of pointers that I find helpful during the practice. Remember these are just pointers. They are just words. They are not the answer. You don’t have to agree or disagree with them. You may find it useful to create your own list of pointers. Please share any pointers you find helpful in the comments below.
